The health benefits of resveratrol are most often attributed to longevity. But resveratrol’s health benefits go much deeper and, unlike many compounds, have been extensively studied. Please check out the links to the right or visit our Resveratrol Videos page to see more of the research.
Some of the other, lesser known, health benefits of resveratrol are:
- acting as blood thinning agent, minimizing the formation of clots and alleviating the damage to blood vessels, and suppressing platelet aggregation.
- acting as an anti-inflammatory, anti-infective (against fungi and viruses)
- controlling cravings leading to weight loss
- shielding against hearing loss
- increasing and reducing estrogen excess in men (and in women who require aromatase in the treatment of cancer)
- reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s disease
Resveratrol Reduces Inflammation
Dr Alirio Melendez, a senior lecturer in the University of Glasgow’s Division of Infection and Immunology, along with collaborators in Singapore, have solved a mystery which has puzzeled experts since red wine was first identified as having health benefits. How does resveratrol control inflammation?
“Strong acute inflammatory diseases such as sepsis are very difficult to treat and many die every day due to lack of treatment, moreover, many survivors of sepsis develop a very low quality of life due to the damage that inflammation causes to several internal organs. The ultimate goal of our (resveratrol) study was to identify a potential novel therapy to help in the treatment of strong acute inflammatory diseases.”
Resveratrol’s anti inflammatory health benefits are derived from its ability to inhibit the cyclooxygenases (COX-1 and COX-2) and partly through its activity in detoxifying or slowing the production of harmful free radicals.
This is exactly how scientists believe aspirin exerts its cardioprotective effects. Resveratrol could present an attractive alternative to current treatments for chronic inflammation, since aspirin has been known to damage the stomach lining, and many COX-2 have caused cardiovascular problems.
The University of Glasgow study explains how resveratrol can be used to treat inflammatory diseases, such as appendicitis, arthritis, Crohn’s disease, and psoriasis, peritonitis and systemic sepsis among others.
Resveratrol has been widely associated with health benefits ranging from anti-aging to boosting anti-viral treatments. Previous studies have found that resveratrol can help prevent blood clots and combat cancer.
