The List of Foods Known for Being High in Antioxidants

Here are some of the foods high in antioxidants, broken down by their antioxidant claim to fame. Most of these foods are also on a more famous list that we call Super Foods.

Antioxidants are found in a variety of different plants and foods. Usually the plants that are brighter in color are the foods higher in antioxidants.

Antioxidants are also found in meat, though we highlight the healthier meats, and those foods high in antioxidants vitamins. Peruse the list, and you’ll find foods from chocolate to tuna and a lot in between!

Unfortunately, it is well known that our soil has been stripped of much of its nutrient power in the last 50 years. We know that the plant kingdom itself can produce over 4,000 flavonoids and 25,000 phytochemicals – but that is entirely dependent on the concentration of micro-nutrients in the soil. Even if you are eating a balanced diet of these foods high in antioxidants, we still recommend a nutritional supplement.

Apples are high in antioxidantsIn order to get the most antioxidants out of these anti aging foods, you would need to eat a variety of them and get your recommended 5 or more fruits and vegetables everyday. However, even with healthy eating, the shelf life of food, cooking practices, pesticides, preservatives and sugar all help reduce the nutrient value of the foods before they are on your plate. We suggest supplementing your diet with a multi-vitamin and antioxidant supplement.

VITAMIN A
Carrots, spinach, sweet potato, kale, greens, winter squash, swiss chard, bell pepper, cantaloupe and butternut squash, beef liver, mackeral and eggs
Vitamin A is found primarily in foods of animal origin. However, there are some vegetables whose caretenoids are turned into Vitamin A by the body. They are essential for good eyes, skin, immune function, reproduction, and bone growth. By helping to maintain the skin and mucus membranes (in the eyes, lungs and brain) it helps protect the body from harmful bacteria.

VITAMIN C
Berries, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cantaloupe, cauliflower, grapefruit, honeydew, kale, kiwi, mangoes, nectarines, orange, papaya, peppers, snow peas, sweet potato, and tomatoes
Vitamin C Antioxidant is also known as ascorbic acid, which is a water soluble vitamin. It’s required for the synthesis of collagen, an important structural component of blood vessels, tendons, ligaments, and bone. It is critical to brain function and is known to affect our moods. In addition, the vitamin C antioxidant is required in the process of producing energy in our bodies. Vitamin C teams up with Vitamin E, a fat-soluble antioxidant, to really take a double punch to fight free radicals. They work so well together because Vitamin C helps rejuvenate Vitamin E and that makes them a more effective combination in fighting free radicals.

VITAMIN E
Broccoli, carrots, chard, greens, mangoes, nuts, papaya, pumpkins, red peppers, spinach and sunflower seeds
The main function of Vitamin E is as an antioxidant. Vitamin E helps to maintain the integrity of cell membranes throughout the body. Vitamin E plays a major role in how cells communicate with each other, their genetic activity and cell proliferation..
